Dr. Evelyn Reátegui Zirena is a Toxicologist with GSI Environmental Inc. in Austin, Texas. She has over 8 years of research, ecological, and human health risk assessment experience and is currently providing technical support on a wide range of risk communication and risk assessment projects. Dr. Reátegui Zirena received her Ph.D. in Environmental Toxicology from Texas Tech University, an M.S. in Environmental Science from Troy University, and a B.S. in Biology from Peru. She conducted her doctorate research in transgenerational ecological toxicity of metals and fungicides. Prior to joining GSI, she conducted human health risk assessments and wrote health consultations for the Texas Department of State Health Services in collaboration with the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. Dr. Reátegui Zirena has developed health education materials for residents nearby Superfund sites and attended community meetings to address public health concerns related to contaminants. She has also provided technical and risk communication support to the Center of Disease Control and the Department of Defense on environmental exposures related to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). She is heavily involved with the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) and the Society for the Advancement of Hispanic/Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS), as an active member of different groups and a mentor.
