There is increasing awareness and impending regulatory action for microplastics due to findings on their environmental prevalence, persistence, and ability to enter both human and aquatic food webs. Some states such as California are taking immediate action while others are launching pilot programs to conduct further studies; at the federal level, the EPA is working towards first establishing methods and studying microplastic impacts on human and ecological health.
While there are wide ranging concerns from various parties about microplastics, scientific findings on the fate and transport and toxicological risks of microplastics vary widely.
GSI scientists are fully emersed in and conducting scientific research on microplastics from sampling and analysis to fate and transport modeling, to toxicology, and are tracking regulatory movements.
We are available to provide foundational information (or more detailed scientific information as requested) regarding microplastics, discuss methodologies for measuring microplastics, provide information on published and potential environmental impacts, and conduct modeling for fate and transport of microplastics in aquatic systems.

GSI provides regulatory toxicology subject matter expertise for emerging contaminants such as PFAS and 1,4-dioxane. We track the toxicological data and regulatory assessments and decisions; provide our client with summaries and impact assessments; engage with regulatory authorities to ensure sound scientific basis of regulatory decisions; and advise our clients on risk management strategies to minimize effects of changing information and regulations and to ensure public and employee safety and health.

GSI provides technical and strategic support related to regulatory and public engagement and site-specific remediation of emerging and unregulated chemicals in a public drinking water system. We represent our client in regulatory, and public meetings and ensure that toxicology and human health risk information is accurately communicated to and by stakeholders.
