Dr. Cristiane (Cris) Surbeck, PE, PhD, is a Senior Associate Engineer with GSI Environmental, with 30 years of experience in the areas of water resource management, wastewater, biosolids, drinking water, stormwater management, soil and groundwater remediation, fate and transport of pollutants in water, and sustainable infrastructure. As a consultant, she works with government and private clients to resolve complex problems. She has served as an expert witness and expert consultant on matters related to drinking water treatment, biosolids contamination, groundwater contamination, and contaminant fate and transport.
Dr. Surbeck was a faculty member at the University of Mississippi for 16 years, most recently served as Chair and Professor of the Department of Civil Engineering, and has nine years of experience in environmental consulting. She served as President of the Environmental & Water Resources Institute (EWRI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) from 2017 to 2018. She is the author of the textbook Site Assessment and Remediation for Environmental Engineers and is the recipient of three state and national ASCE awards. She is also the recipient of UM School of Engineering awards related to scientific research and excellence in teaching.
At the University of Mississippi, Dr. Surbeck led the chapter of Engineers Without Borders on three trips to work on projects in Togo, West Africa. She has extensive work experience in the US, Europe, and Latin America, and is fluent in English, Portuguese, Spanish, and French.
