Sam Berkelhammer has experience in brownfields assessments of sites impacted by petroleum and hazardous substances, low-flow groundwater sampling, and various other tasks to assist the team.
Sam conducted field work as Staff Geologist which included borehole drilling and monitoring well installation oversight, including well development by surging, bailing, and pumping. Description of soil using USCS classification and collection of subsurface soil samples from split spoon samplers using Montana DEQ-approved methods. Collection of groundwater samples using a bladder pump and low-flow techniques. Installation of sub-slab vapor probes and collection of soil vapor samples using Summa canisters with flow controllers and helium as a leak tracer. Collected surface soil samples on a pre-determined grid by using GPS. Oversaw test pit excavation to evaluate subsurface soil conditions.
He followed decontamination Standard Operating Procedures to avoid cross-contamination. Documented work on standard field forms, including daily field records, borehole logs, groundwater development and sampling forms, well installation as-builts, well development forms, equipment calibrations forms, soil vapor sampling forms, and test pit logs. Used Photo Ionization Device to evaluate volatile petroleum hydrocarbon content.
Sam also ordered utility locate services to ensure that subsurface investigations would not interfere with utilities. Coordinated with subcontractors to schedule work schedules. Communicated with Project Managers and Montana DEQ regulators about daily status of field work. Assisted Project Managers with programmatic tasks, including proposals, eligibility forms, and various community outreach tasks.
