MODFLOW-USG solves the groundwater flow equation using unstructured grids. Many advanced packages are included to solve practical water resource problems.

An unstructured grid version of MODFLOW called MODFLOW-USG has been released by the USGS to provide flexibility in gridding for MODFLOW solutions. Sorab Panday, Principal at GSI, is a lead developer of MODFLOW-USG and worked closely with the USGS on its development.

Unstructured grids allow for inclusion of various cell geometries and grid-nesting methodologies to discretize the domain as well as inclusion of various other flow processes and domains such as flow through interconnected one-dimensional features like fractures, karst, wells, or channels in a fully implicit formulation using the “Connected Linear Network” (CLN) Package. The code is in the public domain and is freely available from the USGS website.

Further development of MODFLOW-USG has continued with additional enhancements and features including the following highlights:

  • Multi-species contaminant and heat transport
  • Agricultural or remedial system return flow package (QRT) with solutes
  • Density dependent flow and transport
  • Unsaturated zone flow (Richards Equation) and transport
  • Dual-porosity flow and transport
  • Matrix diffusion
  • Time varying material properties
  • Automated time stepping
  • Turbulent flow through conduits
  • Several user-friendly mechanisms to restart or continue simulations and simplify processing
