Dr. Scofield is a Principal Toxicologist and Vice President with GSI Environmental Inc. He has more than 40 years of experience performing environmental assessment, remediation, and due diligence projects in the United States and abroad. He has extensive experience in performing human health risk assessments and exposure assessments for chemicals in the environment and consumer products.He has managed or performed more than 500 human health risk assessments for numerous types of sites: major Superfund, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), agricultural chemical, Brownfield redevelopment, petroleum spills, manufactured gas plants, and other waste disposal or spill sites. In support of recent litigation, Dr. Scofield evaluated health risks associated with PFASs and other chemicals present in biosolids applied to silage crops.
Potential exposure routes evaluated included direct contact with shallow agricultural soil, as well as uptake into plant material, meat, and milk. He has also performed and reviewed multi-pathway risk assessments for diesel exhaust emissions, municipal and hazardous waste incinerators, and air emissions from industrial process stacks. In the area of product safety, Dr. Scofield has completed over 600 risk assessments for chemicals in consumer products, most being evaluations under California’s Proposition 65.
Dr. Scofield has taught and lectured extensively on risk assessment and has served on peer review committees for the U.S. Department of Defense and the State of California. He was a member of the committee that developed the ASTM Standard, Risk Based Corrective Action (RBCA) for Petroleum Release Sites, and he was a member of the National Research Council Committee on Natural Attenuation.
