Increased awareness of sustainability was a constant reflection throughout 2025, highlighting that we are still in the early stages of broader corporate acceptance of the impacts business operations have on climate and resource management.  Recognizing that sustainability remains in its early stages for many of the nation’s largest companies gave me optimism about the future and the long, meaningful road ahead for these organizations.

Largely driven by climate regulations, many large, well-recognized companies—some of which historically did not publicly prioritize climate issues—were required to more closely examine their climate impacts and associated risks, often with the understanding that their positions may need to be publicly disclosed. Many of these organizations lacked established sustainability programs and were forced to build them from the ground up, frequently placing responsibility on those in the company without a sustainability or environmental background.

This dynamic presents a significant opportunity for companies to develop sustainability programs with a strong, defensible foundation and to craft strategies that are both realistic and justifiable. While these organizations may be behind peers with more mature sustainability practices, they are well positioned to learn from industry successes and missteps, enabling them to implement more thoughtful and pragmatic sustainability strategies from the outset.
