Overtopping Erodibility Risk Evaluation, Spaulding Lake Dam, California.

Extreme climate conditions have changed since dam completion because FERC’s Part 12D process has identified overtopping erodibility under a Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) event as a potential failure mode (PFM) of this 276-ft tall hydropower dam. GSI estimated the stream power of the impinging water jet during a Probable Maximum Precipitation (PMP) event from HEC modeling. Rock properties, including joint spacing and orientation, were estimated from geologic mapping and LiDAR point cloud data. Reliability analysis was performed to evaluate the erodibility and stability of the dam base.

California High-Speed Rail Alignment, San Joaquin Valley and Antelope Valley, California

As the modeling and risk evaluation task leader of the project team, GSI evaluated the potential impacts of ground subsidence on the operation of the California High-Speed Rail. GSI’s role included calculation of both the vertical and horizontal soil displacement, the potential formation of soil fissures and faults, and the concern that the topographic changes due to ground subsidence would lead to increased flooding along the alignment. GSI’s scope included assembling and evaluating large topographic data sets to develop a conceptual site model of the study area, modeling both the regional and local subsidence, and forecasting future flooding depths using the FLO2D.
