Description

The USG-Transport software, available as an open-source public domain simulator from the GSI website, includes advances made to the MODFLOW-USG code initially released by the USGS in 2013. The recent release of MODFLOW 6 (version 6.2.0 released in October 2020) also includes unstructured grid and solute transport capabilities with inclusion of density dependent flow effects. Use of these simulators may be easy given available tools and GUIs that support such modeling efforts. However, proper application of these transport models for evaluating solute and/or heat migration in the subsurface further requires an understanding of the transport processes/mechanisms and the specific numerical approaches used to solve the transport equations.

This webinar presents an overview of transport solution capabilities and approaches in USG-Transport. The capabilities and approaches currently released in MODFLOW 6 Version 6.2.0 are similar. Specific topics that will be covered include:

This 2.5-hour webinar will be presented by Dr. Sorab Panday from GSI Environmental Inc. who is the lead author of MODFLOW-USG/USG-Transport and is involved in the development of MODFLOW 6. Dr. Panday has conducted research and development in state-of-the art methods for solving complex flow and transport problems, has published in reputed journals, and has conducted seminars and workshops on groundwater modeling for students and industry professionals. He has decades of experience in consulting for environmental flow and transport of solutes/heat and has developed and applied models for a variety of industries and applications.

The webinar is appropriate for you if you develop or use models for environmental decision making. Even though some material may be “in the weeds” to provide details to users with various levels of experience, it is important that those using modeling results for decision making, understand the challenges of modeling solute or heat transport in environmental systems.
